The Rio Grande College of Pharmacy anticipates that most of its students
will receive credit for much of the required experiential learning upon submission of a portfolio. Any students who are not granted full credit for the experiential component of the curriculum may have to complete the experiential component through experience in the workplace.
All workplaces must be pre-approved by the course instructor before any credit may be awarded. The Rio Grande College of Pharmacy does not provide assistance in securing employment to satisfy the experiential cuurriculum.
Most workplaces involving patient contact will provide the required clinical environment, including most students' current workplaces. Approval of a workplace for the externship (Ph705) will be granted if it provides students the opportunity to develop certain competencies. Competencies used to evaluate the suitability of a workplace may include:
- requires knowledge of prescription and non-prescription medications and appropriate adult and pediatric dosages and dosage forms
- provides opportunities to interpret and evaluate of prescriptions and/or medical orders
- provides opportunities to determine the appropriateness of therapies
- provides opportunities to interview patients and/or review patient records for potential medication-related problems
- provides opportunities to review patient histories with particular attention to medication incompatibilities and interactions
- provides opportunities for actions to avoid potential medication-related problems
- provides opportunities to use pharmaceutical calculations
- provides opportunities to dispense medications
- provides opportunities to consult patients on appropriate utilization of medications and side-effects
- provides opportunities to develop skills necessary to monitor patient outcomes
