Non-Traditional PharmD Education

Rio Grande College of Pharmacy

Curriculum

The Non-Traditional PharmD program consists of the didactic, interactive, and experiential components. It can be completed in as little as two months (which is not realistic for most students) and must be completed within four years after registration.

Students are expected to study at their own pace. The College will send students periodic updates on their status, but students should be sure to measure their own progress toward completing the program within the time allowed. Most students complete the program in from 6 to 18 months.

Didactic Component

Course-work at the Rio Grande College of Pharmacy is taught based primarily on disease states, organ systems, and theraputic concepts. Each course is centered on the Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program modules published by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Each module is supplemented with ancillary course materials and exams. Students are required to complete the biostatistics course and any six of the remaining courses. Students choose which courses to complete at home and submit exams from each course on their own schedule.

In addition to completing seven PSAP-based courses, students are required to complete a course in physical assessment.

Each course has a web-based discussion board. Students are encouraged to ask questions and discuss issues raised in each course.

Interactive Component

Students must participate in an informational seminar by asking questions, responding to questions posed by other students, and discussing topics selected by the instructor. The seminar is conducted via a web-based discussion board.

Experiential Component

Students are required to complete two phases of experiential learning: a clinic designed to teach and evaluate communications skills and an externship designed to teach and evaluate professional and pharmaceutical knowledge. Students may be given credit for prior learning experience in order to fulfill this experiential learning requirement.

The amount of credit awarded for prior experience is based on written evidence of relevant knowledge and skills submitted by each student. Students not receiving full credit for the externship must work for a maximum of five months in a pre-approved employment setting.

Required employment for the externship can be met in a diverse variety of sites involving patient contact, including most students' current workplaces. The Rio Grande College of Pharmacy does not provide assistance in securing approved employment.

All program requirements must be completed honestly. Any evidence of academic dishonesty will be investigated by the College and disciplinary action will be taken if warranted, including possible expulsion or revocation of a diploma previously granted by the College.
